Summer is on its way, and as much as we love it, the pesky mosquito and other creatures which accompany it simply cannot be neglected. Not only do mosquitoes cause troubles when we try to enjoy the summer nights outdoors, but the recent Zika virus epidemic is yet another reason to ward off these pests. The store-bought sprays are effective at keeping these pests at bay, but many of them contain DEET, a chemical which has been found to cause various health issues, such as skin irritation, allergic reactions, and even nervous system interference.
NATURAL BUG REPELLENTS
The good thing is there are natural foods and compounds which can also dismiss the insects, without the risk of exposing yourself to harmful chemicals.
Numerous studies have shown that lemon eucalyptus essential oil has the ability to repel the mosquitoes. Also, the citronella essential oil, which is drawn out from lemon grass, also has the ability to ward off the mosquitoes due to its strong scent.
According to many studies, the substances which are obtained from the peel of citrus fruits like tangerines, limes, grapefruits, lemons, and oranges also could repel the mosquitoes and many other insects. The strong smell of citrus fruits is extremely effective at keeping mosquitoes away without causing side effects.
MOSQUITO REPELLENT MASON JARS
One of the most effective ways of using essential oils and citrus fruits to repel mosquitoes is the use of mason jars. Below is the method of making your own mosquito repellent mason jar.
- 2 mason jars
- 1 lemon, sliced
- 1 lime, sliced
- 4 sprigs of rosemary (optional)
- 10 drops of lemon eucalyptus essential oil
- 10 drops of citronella essential oil
- Add even amount of lemon and lime slices into the jars
- Add 2 sprigs of rosemary into each jar
- Pour water into the jars (3/4)
- Finally, add the essentials oils without mixing them together
