Follow these instructions precisely so that you can properly prepare your syringe for use, and correctly inject your dose of CAVERJECT in a sterile (germ-free) manner. Before using Alprostadil, you should be trained by a healthcare provider on how to prepare and properly administer an injection.
Do not inject with a needle that is bent (see notes under subheadingHow to Prepare the Impulse of Caverject). If at any time, the needle is bent, do not use it for injecting Caverject Impulse. Change the exact location and the side of your penis where you inject Caverject every time you use Alprostadil.
When you buy Alprostadil injection, switch sides of the penile shaft, and select different locations each injection, as shown by the shaded areas in Figure O. With each injection of edexA(r), alternate the sides of the penis, and change the location for injections (Figure L). The site of the injection should be clear of visible veins and either side of the shaft of the penis.
Maintaining firm control over the penis, pick up the syringe with your other hand, and insert the needle directly into your chosen injection site (see figure Q). Place the needle horizontally, and insert the needle into the selected injection site with gentle pressure until the needle is nearly fully inserted in your penis (Figure M). The injection will be in the portion of the penis shown in Figure K, which is shaded. Do not inject in the white region, as the white region can have blood vessels.
Do not inject Alprostadil into veins or other blood vessels (the white areas in Figure O). Only a matching injection-resistant diluent water or water containing benzyl alcohol should be used in the reconstitution of the Caverject powder. Caverject(r) must be mixed with the solution called Bacteriostatic water for injection, U.S.P.
Insert needle in provided bottle and inject from your own syringe, 1.2 mL Sodium Chloride injection USP, into bottle with Alprostadil. Carefully exchange the needle used for mixing all of the liquids for a new one-half-inch, 29- or 30-gauge needle for the injection.
Do not discard the alcohol pad; you will need to use it again after giving your injection. If your healthcare provider has recommended you use an alcohol swab, rub it on the injection site and allow it to dry. The injection site should alternate between the injection site on the penis side and on the site where you are injected; the site where you are injecting should be cleaned using the alcohol swab.
Alternate your site of injection every time you use the Caverject Impulse; select one side of the penis for that injection, use the other side the next time, etc. Choosing involves switching your injection location from the right side of your penis for a single injection to the left side for your next injection. Choose a different site for each injection every time this medication is used to help prevent skin problems.
